[insert clever title here]

i haven't posted anything in FOREVER because i have been super busy. :(  i just painted my nails for the first in a month, and my last few manicures have been incredibly slapdash and not worth talking about.

the tl;dr version is: my cat got sick (and is still sick, and i am still stressing about the little jerk because he's like 900 years old in cat years — basically a feline time lord), i've been working a lot, and i've spent most of my free time either sleeping or knitting or cleaning.  did i mention i spent 10+ hours this week cleaning off all my shelves and basically purging my living space of all the worldly possessions i've accrued in the last decade?  (nail polish not included.)

anyway, i finally had some free time yesterday, and i was able to try out a nail polish i've been trying to get my hands on since BEFORE 2014 (!!!) and some studs i picked up from a canada-based nail art shop called the nail room.

LOOK HOW TINY THESE STUDS ARE.  IT IS UNREAL.  i got some circular ones that are even smaller than this.  my god, we truly live in an age of wonders.

let's talk about customer service, babyyyyy.

let's talk about you and me.  let's talk about how sometimes i'm trying to think about what to title posts and my brain spirals into nothing but salt-n-pepa lyrics.  oh lord.  how do people title posts?  c'est un mystère.  and sorry for the immediate topic change, but i swear customer service will be relevant in this post.  I SWEAR.

first, let's talk about how i wore cirque epoch for like three weeks.  this is a WIP of my primula florindae  that i took a while ago.  i swear, this polish wears like armor.  when i finally took it off the other day, i just had ONE TINY CHIP on my right middle finger.  that's it.  the only thing on my fingertips was epoch itself and a coat of one of rainbow honey's scented topcoats (the bubbly, probably, because it's my fave).  tl;dr: i highly recommend cirque polishes.  i can't say enough good stuff about them.

aaaand this is what's on my nails now.  it's 2-3 coats of NCLA downtown dollface, and the darker color is enchanted polish's april 2014 shade.  i also topped it with rica glossy glam, which shrank A LOT on me.  like, a lot a lot.  you can see in this photo where the enchanted polish pulled away from the NCLA at the base and tips of my nails, and this is after i filed away the exposed nail that both polishes shrank away from.

i normally just use rainbow honey's topcoat, but it's not very glossy, so i'm still in search of my HG glossy topcoat!  i'd say that glossy glam is better than seche, imo, though – it's got a very thin consistency in the bottle but is very shiny on the nail, and successfully melted away the bumps created by the chevron nail vinyls i used.  i'll probably try it next time i use a hungry glitter polish.  anyway, this manicure definitely looks better from farther away (evidence under the cut)!

#boring #pardonmycuticles

(this  polish isn't boring.  i'm boring.)  before slapping this (cirque epoch) on my nails because i couldn't resist the bottle anymore, i wore rainbow honey trifolium for like a week.  i didn't think to look at the photos i took of it on my Real Camera™ before removing it because i'm a big dummy, and afterwards i realized that they are all blurry.  omg.  this cellphone picture i posted on instagram is the least blurry one i took.  horrifying.

(sidenote: trifolium is SO bright.  i think it probably has neon pigment because it dries really satin and is super vibrant and blinding outside, to the point where my camera was like "dear god, what is happening?"  seriously, in all the pictures i took, my fingertips were perfectly in focus and my nails were just a series of small green blurs.  it's a beautiful color, but a bit beyond my photography skills)

when i say i couldn't resist the bottle for this polish anymore, I MEAN IT.  i have a mini stash of untrieds on top of my dresser right next to my bedroom door, so every time i walked past it i would pick it up and look at how the colors shift in the light.  it's really incredible.

indoors it looks mostly teal – we had a huge party on sunday with like 30+ people in the house, and they all kept complimenting me on my teal polish.  i'm literally an insane person, so i just kept being like, "okay, but come outside and look at it here.  LOOK AT THE COLOR-SHIFT. [crazy eyes]"

also,  at the time i took these pictures, epoch had been on my nails for almost a week, so it has pretty great wear time!  i type alllll daaaaaay for my job (and my main video game hobby also involves angrily keysmashing), so getting through nearly a week without any chips is pretty astronomically rare.  they tend to be more on my thumbs than other nails, for some reason, but my thumbs are also still looking great!  i'm more self-conscious about my current cuticle gap than i am about any tipwear/chipping.

ST. PATRICK STRIKES BACK.

oh maaaan, my nails have been pretty boring since my last post!  still keeping with the green theme, but nothing too exciting.

i did a subtle (REALLY SUBTLE [ALMOST NONEXISTENT]) gradient with zoya hudson/zuza/charla.

i got super frustrated with this because not only did bits of the sponge i use break off and get stuck to BOTH my thumbs, but i dented my left middle finger (you can still kind of see the indentation in this picture) AND my right index finger and i immediately messed up both my thumbs right after painting them.

(re: the messed up thumbs: i was wearing some yoga pants that always fall off my ass because, for some reason, victoria's secret thought it was a great idea to put really heavy zippers on the back pockets of yoga pants made of the thinnest fabric ever crafted by the hands of man.  i was like, "hmm, my thumbs are probably dry enough to pull up my pants..." and i could not have been more wrong.)  oh my god.  what a nightmare.  i'm still angry about it.  i swear i'm going to burn those pants.

this is also a "boring" manicure, in that it's essentially just a swatch, but holy crap, cirque lichen is the most beautiful.  i started off yesterday trying to do one of those lazy man's water marbles, where you drop polish in the water and spritz it with hairspray rather than toothpick-drawing intricate patterns into the polish, but it...did not work.

i think i need a different kind of hairspray or something; it hit the polish and did nothing.  i tried to do sort of a messy water marble, just because i'd gone to the trouble of getting all the supplies i'd need anyway, but, uh.  water marbling is rough.  0/10, would not recommend.

(more like st. patrick's month)

i am superduper grossly into st. patrick's day. my dad's side of the family is irish, to the point where he grew up with an irish name and an american one. i'm pretty sure it was his grandfather or great-grandfather who actually immigrated to the states, so ireland is fairly far back in my history (although my grandfather spoke with a slight irish lilt).

my actual ancestry is kind of a mishmash – and thanks to the magic of genetic testing, i am now aware that my particular brand of mishmash could be described as 100% bland:

"hello, yes, we've analyzed your DNA and come to the conclusion that you're hella white."

but despite the fact that my genealogical profile is basically "LOL EUROPE" i do identify with my irish ancestry most.  i guess growing up hearing stories of crazy irish relatives and tales of county cork will do that to a person.

the point of this is that i'm SUPER, RIDICULOUSLY, UNHEALTHILY INTO SAINT PATRICK'S DAY.  meat and potatoes and green and beer and so many other great things!  seriously, don't even talk to me about corned beef hash!  don't talk to me about the multitude of delicious hot dishes that will result from st. paddy's day feasting!  so march is going to be my green nails month, and i already started. (✪◡✪)

st. paddy's day skittles!  from pinky to thumb, i'm wearing picture polish tiffany and honeydew, ncla santa monica shore thing, lacc 1977, and butter london slapper.  it's all topped off with rainbow honey yoshimi! ♥

i have a handful of picture polish shades but i'd never used them before, and they were both magnificent.  they were a little streaky, but topcoat sorted it out immediately.  the only polish i was a little vexed by was 1977, which was surprisingly sheer.  i wound up having to use three coats.

yoshimi has really pretty turquoise-y glitter in it that really pops against slapper and the two picture polish shades, but kind of melts away into SMST and 1977.  and howwww did i wind up with no black square glitter on my thumb?!  (i wish my camera could pick up how pretty slapper is, but for some reason it really muddied it out in every photo i took.  i need to just bite the bullet and make a lightbox so i don't have to rely on unpredictable natural light, but i'm sooooooo lazyyyyyyyyy.  i'm the worst.)

in this picture, you can see the creepy mannequin hands my mom buried in her backyard.  it's like a zombie garden.  so weird.

i don't know how long i'm going to keep this on – i went to show my dad, and he was really excited about green nails, but then he just said, "they look blue."  #FAILURE.  i guess i'll go with a less minty palette next week!

▼triangles & texture▼

i'm not normally a huge fan of texture polishes.  i almost always wind up topcoating them – i really love the look of textured polish, but i hate the feeling of my nails dragging against my clothes or blankets or whatever my nails happen to brush against.  it's like nails on a chalkboard...except my nails are the chalkboard.  if that makes sense.  (it doesn't.)

however, when i saw NCLA's candy coats, i couldn't resist ordering a few! when they arrived, i noticed that don't sugar coat it! looked like a deepened version of rainbow honey tessie, and wanted to do something simple and cute with them.  (i should probably mention that DSCI! is totally sucking all the pigmentation out of tessie in this photo.  tessie is far less ghostly pale in reality.)

i painted accent nails in DSCI! on my ring and thumbnails, and two coats of tessie everywhere else – that seemed a little boring, though, so i wound up taping some triangles over the top later.

elsa nails! *:・゚✧

i've had it in my head to do a gradient with rainbow honey celestia, heisenberg, and your hand in mine ever since i got YHIM.  the polishes just wound up sitting next to each other on my shelf, and i'd think "next manicure!" every time i walked by them... but i kept wanting to try out new tricks instead (tape gradient, watercolor mani, and so on).

i also watched disney's frozen recently, and i kiiiind of feel like elsa would totally magic her nails to look like this – they're super sparkly and super icy, and if i had the vocal cords of idina menzel i'd totally be belting out "let it go" right about now.

(please forgive the glitter that is all over my hands in these photos.  it's gonna take a few hand-washings to get rid of it!)  celestia/heisenberg/your hand in mine have been sitting around in my untrieds since i got them, so i really had no idea how they'd apply.  this is one coat of celestia over the whole nail, one coat of heisenberg over 2/3 of the nail, and one coat of YHIM over the final 1/3 of the nail + some sponged touch-ups.

galentine's nails!

for some reason, my camera is having a hissy fit tonight and it refuses to focus, so these photos are a bit garbage – probably a combination of it being indoors, it being nighttime, and me having had two cups of coffee today and not much in the way of food (i'm still a little jittery).

but.  galentine's nails!  oh, man!  i picked up rainbow honey cutie pie and it is aptly named.  i was going to wear it over a gradient and then i saw +Melissa Dexter's review of papillon — hi!  (✪◡✪) you're so nice and i've been blogstalking you for a while!) — and decided to wear it over black instead.  i went with rainbow honey nyx and topped it off with cult nails wax that, but it honestly looked pretty good shiny, too.

ombre triangles ♥

ombre triangles with two coats of zoya taylor + triangles in the base color, ncla bel air trophy wife, & rainbow honey oni.

this is one of my favorite manicures.  it's got a lot to do with how rare it is for me to look down and see nails that match my skin – it's much more likely that i look down and see bright blue or purple or green!  i think zoya chantal would match my skintone a bit more than taylor, so i think i might have to pick it up next time i'm in ulta or shopping zoya's site.  taylor is noticeably darker than my skin in real life, although it's not as obvious in photos.

i think this look is pretty intuitive, but i'll talk about how i did these under the cut.

watercolor nails

i've seen so many beautiful watercolor nails in the time i've spend stalking nail polish blogs & youtubers.  i haven't mastered the art myself, but it's a really simple, easy, and fairly fast way to get super cute nails!

this is three coats of opi my vampire is buff, and the watercolors are all rainbow honey – mint flavor, tessie, & apple kid.

swallowtail shawl & echo flower shawl

since i've made a couple nail posts, here are the only two knitting projects i have photos of (and an extra photo of my to-block pile, which is ever-growing because i hate-hate-hate blocking)!  these were both blocked many moons ago, so the borders are not as crisp as they were originally, and both the yarns are semi-mysteries due to how long ago i knitted these.

first up, my swallowtail shawl (free pattern here)!

ye olde nails (cellphone photos!)

oh maaan, it's so weird looking back at my manicures from over the past year!  from before i can remember, i bit my nails.  i stopped once in high school and once in my early 20s, but only lasted a few months both times before my anxiety got the best of me and i was gnawing away at them again.  i finally quit by obsessively filing my nails instead of biting them – in other words, i replaced a bad habit with a good one.  i had nail files all over my house so if i ever got a hangnail i could immediately fix it and not be tempted tip bite them.  i've now had non-bitten/torn/shredded nails for over a year, and i'm pretty proud!

— butter london artful dodger + opi the living daylights
i'm pretty sure i painted OVER my cuticles.  yikers.

blue + glitter

i recently went through a glitter phase, and my nails were pretty shredded from the repeated glitter-removal process.  i was trying to stave off the desire to slather my nails in glitter, but then i got a little sample pack of upcoming polishes in a rainbow honey grab bag!  i got minis of metalmark and midnight fountain and couldn't resist wearing the latter on at least my ring finger & thumb –

this is two coats of contrary polish santorini on pointer, middle, and pinky fingers, & one coat of santorini topped with a coat of rainbow honey midnight fountain on my ring finger.

hello, internet!

i'm sara, a 27-year-old television, video game, nail polish, and yarn enthusiast.  i've had a nails & knits tumblr for a little while, but i find that i really want to talk a bit more about nail polish than is practical within the structure of tumblr – in my opinion, it's more of an environment for short bursts of text and for sharing quick feelings and images, rather than a place where you can go on long-winded diatribes about the thousands of reasons you love a specific nail polish brand or color, or one indie fiber dyer over another.

with that in mind, i'll be posting some of my nails & knits over here as well, with a little more commentary.  it'll probably take me a while to get things the way i want them, so my apologies if anybody stumbles upon this half-finished mess in the meantime!  (i feel like i should also mention that i've only recently started taking photos of my nails with a real camera instead of my cellphone, so i'll be trying to get my photography skills up to speed as well.  and as of right now, all the images are 500px because that's the tumblr standard!)

to start things off, here's two coats of la couleur couture 1979 topped with one coat of nail pattern boldness boop-oop-a-dupe.
